Mental health at work is not a private matter, it is a team signal

Most workplaces treat mental health as something employees are expected to manage quietly, on their own time, away from work. We treat it as a signal that shows up in behaviour long before anyone says a word about it. The difference is whether a team notices the early signs or waits for someone to reach a breaking point.
Remote and hybrid work did not create this problem, it just removed the boundary that used to hide it. Family, chores, and personal stress are no longer somewhere else while people work, they are in the next room, and every distraction chips away at focus. Most people do not notice their own mental health slipping until it has already cost them a missed deadline or a short temper with a colleague. By the time it shows up in performance, it has usually been building for weeks.
Know the early signs
The first step is not a policy or a survey, it is simply recognising that something has changed. Most people can name the moment their sleep, focus, or patience started slipping, but they rarely connect it to their mental health until someone else points it out. That gap between feeling off and naming it is where most struggles go unaddressed.
- A sudden change in behaviour, such as getting irritated or distracted more easily.
- Procrastinating on tasks that used to get done on time.
- Difficulty staying motivated, even for work someone normally enjoys.
- No longer looking forward to work at all.
Struggling quietly does not make the struggle smaller, it just makes it harder to see.
Make it normal to say something
The response does not have to be complicated. Accept that something is off instead of pushing through it, and say so, whether that is to family at home or a manager at work. Naming the problem out loud is usually what turns a private struggle into a shared one, and a schedule with real breaks built in works better than pushing through and paying for it later in procrastination. None of this should be limited to a pandemic or a work from home policy. Every person struggles to some degree, and noticing early is a team responsibility, not just an individual one.
